About Us

Legacy Early College is committed to providing school environments that promote and protect children’s health, well-being, and ability to learn by supporting healthy eating and physical activity.

Legacy will engage scholars, parents, teachers, food service professionals, health professionals, and other interested community members in developing, implementing, monitoring, and reviewing the nutrition and physical activity policies.

All scholars will have opportunities, support, and encouragement to be physically active on a regular basis.

Qualified child nutrition professionals (Chartwells Corporation) will provide scholars with access to a variety of affordable, nutritious, and appealing foods that meet the health and nutrition needs of scholars; religious, ethnic, and cultural diversity of the student body in meal planning, will accommodate allergy awareness and will provide clean, safe, and pleasant settings and adequate time for scholars to eat.

Legacy is a nut free facility.  That means that Legacy does not provide foods in any meal or snack that contains peanuts or tree nuts.  We also do not use items that "may contain nuts" or "processed in a facility with peanuts or tree nuts."

Legacy Early College participates in available federal school meal programs (including the School Breakfast Program, National School Lunch Program [including after-school snacks], Summer Food Service Program, Fruit and Vegetable Snack Program, and Child and Adult Care Food Program [including suppers]).

Nutrition Education

Children at graduation

Legacy Early College will provide nutrition education as well as physical education to foster lifelong habits of healthy eating and physical activity, and will establish linkages between health education and school meal programs, and with related community services.

Nut-Free School

Children at graduation

Legacy is a peanut and tree nut free school. Our cafe does not serve items with or items that may contain nuts. Nor do we allow these items to be brought into the school.

Physical Activity Opportunities

Children at graduation

Every scholar receives physical education class every day. LEC will foster lifelong habits, such as physical activity, for faculty and staff as well as scholars and will provide the mechanisms to accomplish these goals.

Health Education

Children at graduation

Scholars are taught that being healthy means also being mindful of what we take in.  Our bodies need nutrients to grow just as our minds need knowledge.

Staff Fitness

Children at graduation

All staff are required to maintain a healthy and positive example to our scholars.  Therefore, our staff will exercise a minimum of three times a week and have access to our workout facility.

LEC Infrastructure

LEC Exercise Equipment

Working together as a whole unit, staff and scholars, we can make anything happen! Health and fitness goals are just as important and vital to our success as academic goals.

Healthy Students Are Strong Learners

Recognizing that healthy and active children learn better, Legacy Early College employees full time nurses on campus.  The purpose of school nursing is to enhance the educational process by the modification or removal of health related barriers to learning and by promotion of an optimal level of wellness.  The school nurse accomplishes these activities in partnership with scholars, parents, and school staff.

The school nurses are Registered Nurses certified by the American Heart Association in First Aide, CPR and AED.

Fitness/Cognitive Studies

Legacy takes the next step in your child physical well-being as well as their ability to learn. Legacy's fitness is unique because our scholars have been subject to Fitness/Cognitive Studies conducted by Dr. Julian Reed, Ed.D., MPH, professor of Health Sciences at Furman University. These studies demonstrate our scholars' physical activity directly correlates with their cognitive and learning abilities in class.

Each year, these published studies are presented to the public during Legacy's Fitness/Cognitive Press Conference in February.
