"The Best Nutrition possible for every scholar"

Legacy Early College, in partnership with Chartwells K12, is committed to extending their passion, dedication,
knowledge and enthusiasm into serving each scholar a nutritious and delicious meal. Additionally, the
child nutrition team is tasked with nourishing the bodies, minds and spirits of our scholars and paving
the way for a lifetime of success and well-being.

Feeding our scholars high quality meals that are nutritious and delicious is our top priority. Chartwells' menus are built to support the Dietary Guidelines for Americans and use recipes that taste great and are lower in fat, saturated fat, trans fats, cholesterol and sodium and provide whole grains, fruits, vegetables and appropriate portion sizes for age. We analyze our recipes for nutrient content and food component into nutrient standard or food-base menu planning that comply with child nutrition guidelines for the National School Breakfast & Lunch programs. Our Balanced Choices Meal Program is a guidance system to assist scholars in making the most nutritious parameters and is highlighted on the serving line.

Legacy Early College's menu was developed by registered dietitians to promote optimal health. The menu's innovative design features foods appealing to school-aged children and also incorporates the use of whole grains, lean proteins, and fresh fruits and vegetables. In addition to the hot meal and sandwich rotation, a salad option is available daily, featuring specialty salad recipes twice weekly. The use of over-processed, high-sodium, high-fat foods is minimized. Traditional use of the deep-fat fryer as a preparation method has been eliminated; instead, all hot foods are baked, broiled, steamed, or grilled. A full nutrient analysis of the menu items has been completed using NUTRIKIDS® Menu Planning and Nutritional Analysis software and approved by a registered and licensed clinical dietitian.

Snack Safely

We understand that as parents it is hard to find healthy snacks - especially those that must be peanut and tree nut free.  Please follow this link to the Snack Safely website.  Here you will find a downloadable list of those items in the grocery store that are considered peanut and tree nut (and egg) free.  From there you may pick the healthy snacks for your scholars' classroom.

The Office of Health and Nutrition administers the varying food service programs in South Carolina. Legacy Early College exceeds the typical requirements of these programs by ensuring the following:

  • Hot foods (all animal products are baked, broiled, steamed, or grilled)
  • Cheese products with low fat content
  • Salad options provided daily
  • Fresh and frozen vegetables used to maintain and preserve essential nutrients
  • Whole wheat bread
  • Fresh fruit items offered daily
  • Low sodium food choices offered daily
  • Reduced sugar offerings
  • Skim milk and 1% milk provided
  • No flavored milk (i.e., no chocolate milk/strawberry milk)
  • No vending machines on campus
  • No individual items for sale to ensure all scholars receive a wholesome complete meal

To create a school environment conducive to learning, it is essential that the foods and snacks consumed by all scholars, faculty, and staff at Legacy Early College reflect the school's mission. Therefore, all parents, faculty, and staff receive a snack list illustrating examples of acceptable and unacceptable food items permitted on campus. Furthermore, faculty and staff at Legacy Early College provide healthy food items to reward scholar behavior and performance in the classroom, rather than candy and other unhealthy incentives typically provided to scholars in other schools.

Birthday celebrations are a common practice in schools and frequently involve cakes, candy, and other unhealthy products. In the spirit of Legacy Early College's commitment to health and wellness, birthdays are only celebrated once each month and Legacy Early College is responsible for providing the celebratory items.
